"The New Order" shows that reinvention through innovation is possible for an aging series that's willing to learn and grow. The nightmare is actually a playable sequence, showing you a level from the '92 "Wolfenstein 3D." This all means that you're in for a pretty wild ride either way, but MachineGames certainly didn't take the easy way out. Technological advancements have paved the way for energy weapons, cybernetic enhancements, and of course, some giant mechs. The Nazis won World War II, and spent the years after 1945 growing, conquering and evolving. This story takes place more than 50 years ago, in a very different 1960. Under development at MachineGames, a studio comprised of a seasoned group of developers recognized for their work creating story-driven games, Wolfenstein offers a deep game narrative packed with action, adventure and first-person combat. You'll even hear your knife "clink" off steel doors and "thunk" through wooden crates, with a different sound effect that's appropriate to whatever you happen to be stabbing at that moment. Wolfenstein®: The New Order reignites the series that created the first-person shooter genre. Upping the difficulty shows the main character's face change from a doe eyed baby with a pacifier and bonnet all the way up to a blood spattered maniac bearing a sadistic grin on uber difficulty. It's evident from the first decision you make in the game selecting your difficulty. From destructible environments to lifelike character movements in cut-scenes, the little details in this game really help to weave together a solid and powerful campaign.
It's fascinating to read the notes scattered all over the game that detail the events leading up to the end of the war. Every corner has been fleshed out with a level of grit and definition that plants you firmly in its alternate reality universe.
Developer MachineGames obviously paid a lot of attention to detail in "The New Order." They ran with the fictional world of "Wolfenstein," peppering the game with lore that really helps to shed light on what's going on around you.
